Marine conservation in Hong Kong

Yes to Tai Po man-made beach

The government body the Advisory Council on the Environment yesterday tentatively gave the go ahead for the development of the man made beach at Lung Mei in Tolo Harbour, as reported previously in this website.  However the sponsors of the project the Civil Engineering and Development Department were asked to provide more information to prove that Lung Mei was of low ecological value.  So the cause is not yet lost.

The proposed beach is in an area where the water quality was deemed Very Poor and recent incidences of Red Tide make the prospect of a beach in this ecolgically important area a waste of tax payers money as well as setting yet another bad precedence for environmental protection.

The site is an area fringed by valuable mangroves and a recent study over TWO weekends found more than 100 marine species in the stretch to be destroyed.  The official report and study that lasted three months only showed about 30 species, so a full review of the Environment Impact Assessment is needed.
