ICC: Beach and underwater cleanup

On the 20th October, Living Seas organised another underwater cleanup and beach cleanup at Bayside beach, Clearwater Bay.  This was organised as part of the Hong Kong and International Coastal Clean-up.  As a reminder this bay, is a great location for a beach dive, and has very nice coral coverage in parts.  Definitely worth preserving.

The find (read:shock) of the day was finding a dead wild boar on the beach, when we arrived at 8:30am.  We called the FEHD immediately and luckily they arrived at about 11:15am to take the pig away, just in time, as she was getting pretty smelly!

We had around 25 beach cleanup folk and 10 divers, and the amount of rubbish we managed to clear-up was staggering.  We were able to sort and weigh much of the rubbish, which came out to be 35 large bags full.  and almost 340kgs of trash. (excluding the two tires we also retrieved)

We managed to sort and recycle, lots of aluminum cans and lots and lots of plastic bottles.   Staggering amount of construction trash in the bay (e.g. large ‘hessian’  bags for sand etc) and scary amounts of foam mattresses and the like.  We would really like to know where all this stuff is coming from, it really is terrible.

We are feeling really good with what we managed to achieve, but with more folk coming along we could have achieved more and more, lots of scope for folk to help out.  Watch this space for more events, early in 2014.
