The SCMP reported today about a local sushi restauranteur paying a record HK$430,000 for a bluefin tuna in a Tokyo auction. Hundreds of Hong Kong consumers queued up for hours to try to get a taste for the delicacy a portion of which was airfreighted to a restaurant in Causeway Bay.

Unfortunately the story was not balanced, NO mention of the plight of the bluefin tuna, NO mention of the the fact that stocks have declined by 97% in recent decades, NO mention of the fact that finally the Japanese have warmed up to the fact that their precious fish is in serious trouble. They are finally introducing limits on catches in their own waters and have agreed to further quota cuts from tuna sourced internationally.

Bluefin tuna are a magnificent top predator and a vital part of the marine ecology, absolutely the best thing that we can all do is to not eat Bluefin tuna and to inform everyone to do that same.
