Hong Kong has only one true marine reserve that is fully protected from harmful interference from people. Only 20 hectares in size this marine reserve only covers 0.01% of the 1,650 km2 total sea area in Hong Kong.
The reserve is Cape d’Aguilar Marine Reserve, located on the South East of Hong Kong Island near to Shek O. The reserve is tiny covering only 20 hectares and was primarily set up as a research centre, through the nearby Swire Institute of Marine Science (“SWIMS”)
Cape d’Aguilar acts as a academic facility and no access to the area is allowed without a permit.
Unfortunately because of the size and nature of this reserve it does not really achieve anything with regards to increasing marine biodiveristy in Hong Kong’s waters.
