Hi
This is a call for action. Your help and involvement is urgently needed.
The recent death of a Whale Shark in Hong Kong waters should never have happened. The whale shark was caught in the net of a Stern Trawler, dragged into Aberdeen harbor and left struggling, unable to move in highly polluted waters before it was released.Â
Did you know that in Hong Kong:
- There is no protection for whale sharks under the law. Legal protection applies only if the animal is sold and money is exchanged.
- There is no protection if the whale shark is dead when landed.
- Fish and marine invertebrates are specifically EXCLUDED from the “Wild Animal Protection Ordinance(Chapter 170).
That this was allowed to happen was a disgrace. To ensure that this does not happen again both the fishermen and Government need to know that:
- The whale shark is an internationally important species, threatened with extinction and protected by various international treaties.
- Whale sharks have the potential to be marine tourism attractions. In the Philippines, it is estimated that at a single site/per year, whale sharks brought in US$623,000 into the local economy; in Western Australia, whale shark tourism brought in US$7.8M in a mere two month period.
- In many countries throughout Asia, local fishermen are now firmly behind saving whale sharks.
Living Seas Hong Kong needs your support on this cause. We kindly ask that letters be written to the Chief Executive, EPD, AFCD and to your local district councilors, as well as making phone calls into radio shows, and talks to the media. Do whatever you think is necessary but let’s do it now before we have another tragedy on our hands.
