Dear Mr Edward Yau
I am writing to you to voice my outrage at the death of a whale shark in Hong Kong on the 6th June 2008.
I am shocked to learn that in Hong Kong whale sharks are not protected and that there is no consequences for the killing of this wonderful animal. Â
I find it unacceptable that this beautiful animal, revered and protected in many countries is allowed to die in Hong Kong waters in the nets of a fishing boat trawling so close to Hong Kong’s coastline. It appears that the AFCD and other government officials are unable to stop this from happening and I am saddened that this again showcases Hong Kong as a one dimensional city, where conservation of our valuable marine environment and its potentially vibrant marine life is ignored.
I call on the government to quickly implement meaningful changes to ensure that whale sharks are fully protected in Hong Kong waters.
We trust that these changes will be put in place before another tragedy unfolds.
Yours sincerely
