Living Seas Hong Kong is a diverse group of Hong Kong residents, who all share a love and concern for the underwater world, some from a professional point of view, and some just because they are fascinated with the beauty and the diversity of marine life.
The core members of Living Seas Hong Kong are:
David O’Dwyer
Dod fell in love with the seas at a young age and became a PADI Scuba Instructor in 1994. His love of marine life lead to a strong desire to raise the awareness of the predicament of marine life globally and to proactively work towards better protecting marine life and raising awareness.
Jimmy Lo
In 2011, Jimmy was introduced to Living Seas Hong Kong (LSHK), where he learned more about their ocean clean-up/conservation incentives. Since then, he became more involved in and devoted to LSHK marine conservation volunteering programs, such as coastal clean-ups, reef checks, and marine life surveys, just to name a few.
Scuba diving has allowed Jimmy to explore the immense variety of marine life under the surface, as well as to discover new places and most importantly, incited his passion for ocean conservation and marine life preservation.
John Orams
John has always loved escaping into the ocean and the natural world but says his concern for its wellbeing has grown exponentially since coming to live here in Asia and seeing so many beautiful places under threat from overfishing and marine pollution.
Working with the Living Seas team, helping with their Marine surveys and beach clean-ups has allowed him a way to help combat the degradation of Hong Kong’s marine environment.
Through assisting with Living Sea’s efforts to raise public awareness and push for more government protection for Hong Kong’s underwater world he hopes to continue contributing to conservation here and help establish better environmental protection for Hong Kong beautiful waters in the years to come.
Dr. Ng Tsz Yan – Scientific Advisor
Dr NG Tsz Yan (TY) obtained her PhD in Biology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, with a research focus on marine ecology and biodiversity, coral biology and the effect of climate change on them. TY was trained to be a marine biologist but she is interested in all sorts of wildlife, participating in various citizen science programmes surveying different kinds of local biodiversity. She is also fond of spreading the message of conservation through education, teaching part-time at the Hong Kong Metropolitan University on environment-related subjects as well as courses related to biodiversity and conservation in other education centres. TY was appointed by the Hong Kong Government as a youth member at the Environmental Campaign Committee, advising the government on publicity and educational programmes related to the environment with a view to contributing to the government’s formulation of relevant policy initiatives and measures. She is also a member of the Museum Advisory Committee and Science Sub-committee.
Jarvis Lee
Jarvis always loves the nature, both the land and water. He enjoys hiking, rock climbing, kayaking and scuba diving in HK and around the world. He is now one of the core members of Living Seas Hong Kong.
Jeffrey Lee
After 20 years in the actuarial / employee benefits industry, Jeffrey decided to take the plunge and got his scuba diving license on a holiday trip to Australia in 2005. For the next few years, he painstakingly tried to squeeze in some local snorkelling or overseas dive trip amidst his 70-80 hour work weeks, as well as continue with his diver education. In the meantime, he has learned about the beauty and challenges faced by Hong Kong’s underwater world.
As one of the founding members of Living Seas Hong Kong (勃勃海洋) in 2007, he has been appalled by the lack of official policy to sustain Hong Kong’s marine environment, as well as the general lack of public awareness in the matter. Since he became a scuba diving instructor in 2008 he has devoted much more time and spirit to this end.
